In practice it is apt to be put in track in too large pieces to pack under the tie to give exactly the desired elevation to rails. Crushed stone, on board cars and ready to put under track costs from sixty five cents to $1.00 per cubic yard. _ J Gravel if entirely free from loam, has the good qualities of broken stone, without the drawbacks, and is therefore preferred by some. In practice it is almost always mixed with loam, and we will discuss it in this condition. It is found in pits along railway lines, especially near rivers. Sometimes gravel is found mixed with sand and a natural cement that forms very solid and excellent material for the first year or two, free from dust in dry weather, but after it has been broken up by changing ties, water gains entrance and not having ready drainage, it soaksinto and disintegrates the material, the value of which for ballast then very much lessens. Gravel is excavated from pits by steam shovel and placed on track by unloading plow at small cost when properly managed. The cost of placing it under track is also moderate, as it is easily shoveled and tamped. It gives an elastic, quiet support to trains, packs closely to the ties and holds them up fairly well, gives good drainage and requires only a moderate amount of repairs and renewals. On the other hand, unless better than is generally met with under practical conditions, it is not permanent nor stable even in dry weather if the traffic is heavy; it is not firm enough to hold the ties in position either against lateral displacement or against the tendency to "creep" under heavy traflic; it holds water and absorbs enough heat from the sun's rays to decay the ties rapidly, softens or...
